Altepetl, Yoahtl—Collectors across CivMC were left scrambling this week after the entire first print run of the Gantoe card from CivTCG, the server’s long-running trading card game, exploded inside a shop chest in Altepetl.

“We had them on the shelf for about forty minutes,” said a shopkeeper, standing beside a crater where the card display used to be. “Someone picked one up, read the ability text out loud, and then there was no shop.”

CivTCG cards, sold on CivClassic and now on CivMC, have depicted famous players and nations from across Civ history for years. Card designers say the Gantoe card was always going to be difficult. “His ability is basically ‘destroy everything near this card,’” said one designer. “In hindsight, we probably shouldn’t have printed it on paper.”

A reprint is now available in a reinforced edition, sealed in obsidian and sold with a warning label. Early buyers say the new packaging has made the card harder to open but easier to trust. “It came in a box inside a box inside a vault,” said one collector. “Honestly, that is the most premium trading card experience I have ever had.”

Card values have reacted sharply. A surviving first-print Gantoe, recovered slightly scorched from the rubble, sold this week for 30 diamonds, a figure experts called “insane” and “still cheaper than an Icenian bounty.”

Nipplerock officials welcomed the reprint, saying it proved the nation’s “continued relevance in culture, arts and demolition.” They also asked whether the next edition could be holographic, “so it explodes in colour.”

At press time, the shop had reopened with a new sign reading “PLEASE DO NOT READ THE CARDS OUT LOUD.”
