Area Newfriend Unsure Which Of Six Alliances He Joined By Clicking Discord Invites

Somewhere, Probably—Local newfriend xX_Newfriend_Xx, 14 hours into his first week on the server, admitted Wednesday that he was “not totally sure” which of six alliances he had joined after accepting every Discord invite sent to him.
“Everyone was really nice,” he said. “People kept messaging me ‘hey, want to join?’ and I said yes, because I wanted to be polite. Now I have 41 servers in my sidebar and three of them are called ‘HQ.’”
The newfriend, who arrived during the recent influx of players that led CivMC to introduce a dynamic queue system in September, believes he is currently a member of the Dawn Guard Pact, the Meridiem Entente, the Lyrean Commonwealth and at least one alliance whose name is just an emoji.
“One of them asked me to defend a vault on Thursday,” he said. “Another one asked me to attack the same vault, also on Thursday. A third one asked me to bring snacks. I said yes to all of them.”
Recruiters from several nations said the situation was “not ideal” but “not uncommon.” One veteran player estimated that a typical newfriend joins between four and nine alliances in their first month, “usually two of which are at war with each other, and one of which is the newfriend himself, by accident.”
The newfriend said he had tried to leave some of the alliances but had been told that leaving required a formal letter of resignation, approval from a council, and in one case a duel.
Despite the confusion, he remains upbeat about his first week. “I’ve learned a lot,” he said. “I know what a vault is now. I know what a pearl is. I know that when someone says ‘we need you on Thursday,’ you should ask which Thursday, and which ‘we.’”
At press time, the newfriend had been pearled by one of his alliances for treason against another of his alliances, and was being held in the vault he had been asked to defend.
